Elizabeth Tocher

ARTIST'S STATEMENT

ELIZABETH TOCHER has a Master of Fine Arts Degree (M.F.A.) in Studio Painting from the University of San Francisco (Lone Mountain College), San Francisco, California.

I work with acrylic paint on paper and on canvas superimposing images such as architectural elements, geometric shapes, vegetation and sometimes figures to develop interesting relationships of elements and shapes. It is a challenge for me to follow an inspiration for a painting and to plan color shapes and color relationships to flow in harmony with my original inspiration. Line, texture and various color values are used to stimulate directional movement.

I wish to express a feeling of mystery in a complete and unified composition and trust that the abstract quality in my paintings will encourage the viewer’s imagination and perception of the work.

I much enjoy the challenge of creating distinctive color, color relationships and various textures in my semi-abstract paintings.

Recognizable forms of nature often appear in my works, also architectural elements and figures, in order to create interesting relationships of the different components of art structure (line, shape, value, color and texture), and a feeling of mystery, to encourage the viewer's imagination.
