ARTIST'S STATEMENT

I carve steel with fire and friction. I transform discarded I-beams, the linear building blocks of modern cities, into flowing organic figures. I came to sculpting, and specifically to steel, as a physical antidote to a constant exposure to computer generated imagery. My art is partly about the process of recycling industrial scrap, but for me it is mostly about exploring what I can do with steel. I particularly enjoy working with I-beams because I am forced to solve a problem within a limited and pre-defined space. The I-beam is a three-dimensional shape consisting of three connected planes. On each of these planes, I 'draw' a picture - the problem to be solved is how to make these pictures interact with each other to form a living, organic object.
