ARTIST'S STATEMENT Currently, my work in various media is abstract and experimental in character. This often results in an image suggesting a landscape I have seen or imagined, but mostly an atmosphere or frame of mind. I reference the subtlety of nature and the power it has over the human spirit, as well as the world’s fragility and our tenuous place within it. The charm of watercolor is in its fluidity, translucency and sense of impermanence that are unique to the medium, lending it well to spontaneity in creating an image. Encaustic offers a wealth of texture, transparent depth, opacity, and the rich color of oil. It is changeable, removable, and sometimes unpredictable, resulting in curious combinations. Printmaking allows for spontaneity, drawing, reproducibility, and variations of an image. Oil feels like a bolder and more permanent statement derived from all of the above. And mixed media encourages blossoming into 3-D. Two related themes that I have begun are ‘Open Book’ which is narrative and often personal, and ‘Kyoto Agreement’, which is inspired by our relationship to Mother Earth and all her denizens. This will take a lifetime!
