ARTIST'S STATEMENT Kim Holl is a plein air painter because she enjoys the challenges of painting outside on location. Unlike studio painting, there is a continuous change in the elements of light and shadow created by the passage of time, and how those relate to the landscape and impact the composition. When painting on location, the artist must work quickly to capture the mood and atmosphere before they change. Therefore, there is no time to create illustrative detail. It is all about massing, value and composition. This leaves the details to the viewer's imagination. When Kim paints, she feels she is no longer an observer of a scene, but rather has become part of that scene. She gets a better sense of place when painting. Painting forces her understand the details of the environment rather than simply viewing nature. Kim needs to study the light, shadows, color relationships, contrasts and subtle tonal changes that she would otherwise pass right by and miss.
