ARTIST'S STATEMENT

An Eccentric Vision

I adhere to the techniques and styles of the last half of the 20th century – started with science fiction/space landscapes in junior high/high school; got a BA in Fine Arts (really!) at UC Berkeley and spent some post college years exploring spray paint and light sculpture as a punk rocker in the flatlands of Berkeley circa 1980-85. Eventually evolved/devolved into a painting style influenced by classic animation and cartoons (Krazy Kat and 1930’s-40’s Warner Brothers; f**k Disney) and by the minimalist styles of late 70’s-80’s underground comix; expressionism, surrealism and dada also played a part. Basically brightly colored existential cartoons – simple forms and simple compositions in out-of-the-tube colors.

“I think you have a problem with color…” – Visitor’s comment, ProArts Open Studios, 1991

“A lot o' people don't realize what's really going on. They view life as a bunch o' unconnected incidents 'n things. They don't realize that there's this, like, lattice o' coincidence that lays on top o' everything. Give you an example; show you what I mean: suppose you're thinkin' about a plate o' shrimp. Suddenly someone'll say, like, plate, or shrimp, or plate o' shrimp out of the blue, no explanation. No point in lookin' for one, either. It's all part of a cosmic unconsciousness.”  (Miller, Repo Man, 1984)
